Step 1- The Journey To Better Nutrition…

You may have heard of them…

If not maybe you have seen them…

What are these oddly bright green, thick textured looking drinks?

What are they and why are they so popular?

The Journey:

I discovered green smoothies as a way to optimize my nutrition. I was looking for a quick, easy, efficient way to get more fruits and vegetables into my diet. It was perfect. It didn’t take too long to prepare, blending takes about 30 seconds, and it takes about 5 minutes to drink. To this day, I think Green Smoothies are still one of the most perfect ways to prepare food. 

As I kept making and drinking these smoothies everyday, I was noticing changes to my body and my mind. I was losing body fat, I felt lighter, I had a greater sense of clarity throughout my days, my skin looked clearer than ever, and overall I had a general sense of well being. When I started noticing these changes, I wanted more. This was the catalyst to discovering how my love for food can impact us more than we could ever imagine.

I was always a lover of food. I wanted to be a chef ever since I could remember. But the types of foods I grew up eating, like many people grow up eating (heavily processed) were not serving my body in the best way possible. In all honesty, they were slowly killing me. I knew I needed to make some changes to my diet, so I did. It’s been a long process. I am still constantly educating myself and learning new things. There are tons of information on the subject of nutrition out there and it can be overwhelming to parse through. Taking it one step at a time is the easiest way to figure out what has worked for me and I advise everyone to do the same.

Be patient with yourself, try different things, and see what works for you.

As soon as I realized the enormous positive effects of changing my habits, I wanted to keep exploring, keep getting healthier, and start helping others so they could also reep these same benefits. Food is personal and cultural. It is such an important part of our society. We need it to live. The roots are incredibly deep, but my goal is to make healthy living as approachable and attainable as possible for those who are trying to better themselves, make changes to themselves and their life.

So, the first thing I tell everyone when the topic of nutrition comes up is: start with one Green Smoothie everyday. As aforementioned, smoothies are an easy way to get a lot of nutrients into your body in a short amount of time. They are also extremely versatile and can cater to those who want to keep it simple or want to jazz it up a bit.

Here’s a few variations of what I recommend for those who “green smoothies” are completely foreign to:

Recipe #1- The Standard

Nondairy Milk (Soy, Oat, Almond, Cashew, Pea, etc.)


Blueberries or Strawberries


Recipe #2 – The Citrus Kick

  • Distilled Water
  • Orange
  • Lemon
  • Banana
  • Kale

Recipe #3- Greener Scenery

  • Distilled Water
  • Pineapple
  • Lime
  • Cucumbers
  • Spinach
  • Kale

For those who want a little more of an extra healthy boost, try experimenting with chlorella or spirulina and other types of less common ingredients. Here’s a few that I personally love: Chia Seeds, Hemp Seeds, Flax Seeds, Maca Powder, Cacao Powder, Goji Berries, Turmeric, and Ginger.

You may be thinking to yourself why is this something I should be considering? Will this really help me? If so, how?

We all know we should be eating more fruits and vegetables but the reality is that most people are still consuming processed food with ingredient names you can’t even pronounce. The truth is that what you put into your body matters. Give yourself a chance, do yourself a favor, and see the effects for yourself.

Things to remember on your journey to better nutrition:

  1. Be patient with yourself
  2. Get in tune with yourself and your body. Pay attention to what it is telling you (such as how it reacts, immediately and over time, to some foods versus others.) Ask yourself, “Do I feel sluggish or energized after eating this?” “Am I sleeping well and waking up feeling well rested?” “Does my body feel looser and lighter?” “Am I having trouble thinking or are my thoughts clearer than they used to be?”
