Tick…Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick…
Have you ever set a goal and then fell off somewhere down the road? Why was that? Were you able to recover and complete what you originally set out to do?
In many cases you set these goals and never end up completing them because somewhere down the road we give up.
Why do we give up though? What keeps holding us up? I mean it can’t be that we don’t want to do it. In the beginning it was such a great idea. We’re so excited. You may have wanted to buy a house, pay off some debts, buy a car, lose some weight, start a business, save enough money to go on a vacation, buy that pair of shoes you’ve been eyeing for a long time, join a sports team, pursue a long lost passion, give up smoking, give up drinking, etc.
If one of those isn’t you then what is it? What’s your goal and what’s slowing you up?
One of the biggest reasons we do not hit our goals is because of temptations down the road that we don’t put into consideration when we originally start.
What that means is that down the road something tempts you and you give in and then you keep giving in to more and more. The old saying is, “One thing leads to another.” To help you understand this in a different context I have brought Sir Isaac Newton to ReadyAction to explain his first law of motion…
“My first law of motion is that objects in motion tend to stay in motion and objects at rest tend to stay at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.”
If it’s a bad action it usually leads to another bad action. If it’s a good action it usually leads to another good action.
It starts with one decision. Only one. That one decision can throw you completely off of what you’re trying to accomplish.
That one temptation whether it’s seeing a good sale at the mall, seeing the desert case at a restaurant, or getting tempted with a few beers, it can throw you off track.
Unless… you “Diffuse The Temptation.”
How do you do this…
When you get tempted you have options but you need to put these in place before they happen. Think about building a house… a builder automatically puts a roof on a house. It’s just part of the process. Why though… silly question right?
Well, if it’s a sunny and not a cloud in the sky for a few weeks you have to expect it’s going to rain sooner or later. It might only rain once the whole summer but good thing you had that roof or the things in your house would be ruined.
In Marc Benioff’s(Founder & CEO of Sales Force) book “Behind The Cloud” he talks about this in his strategy V2MOM. He uses this 5 step strategy in every new endeavor he starts in his business. Maybe a reason why they’re a billion dollar global company.
In this case step 4 is where were looking at… The Obstacles. And it doesn’t just apply to business.
When those temptations happen you have to be prepared.
Here are some strategies you can use when your next temptation arises.
- Go on a quick walk or jog around the block.
- Drink a glass of water.
- Do some pushups or jumping jacks
- Call a Friend(https://readyaction.blog/2018/01/21/recruit-and-call-a-friend-strategy-how-calling-someone-for-10-minutes-can-help-you-out-when-youre-not-right/)
- Write your goal and vision on a notecard and have it in your wallet to take out every time you have that temptation.
- Have ONE book, podcast episode, song, or youtube video that you play or read every time you get ‘the urge.’
- Have a safe spot, where you go to and meditate(check out some basic benefits of mediating at https://www.gaiam.com/blogs/discover/meditation-101-techniques-benefits-and-a-beginner-s-how-to)
- Have a safe word or phrase that you repeat 10-20 times to get you back in the right mindset.
- Change your Environment- Go to a cafe, restaurant, or a different room in the house.
Ultimately it’s up to you though. Are you willing to make the necessary sacrifices in your life to get what you want? Or are you going to continue to make the same excuses…
Have your vision and be ready for one hell of a fight because it’s not going to be easy.
… Tick… Tick… Tick… (that’s the sound of the “Temptation Bomb” about to go off.)
Diffuse it… before you do.
